Brief words about Cambridge O level Chemistry papers 2013

[Updated : 28 Jan 2014 ]

Hi all,
It is a New Year!! Let us refresh ourselves in this New Year and think uplifting thoughts to start this New Year aright.

Let me mention the dirty word : "exams". Sorry, all of us do not like it but we have to face it someday.

You may read this post only later in the course of your study, as it is only the start of the year.

For the Chemistry exam papers 2013, the long structured questions were quite unexpected, at least for me, and 2 questions were taken and modified from  A level questions. I did mention before some of the topics that came out in the papers, eg. disproportionation, Period 3 elements and their compounds.
Electrochemistry was a favorite topic in the papers again. And there was a bio related question on photosynthesis in the last question. Students need to recall their Sec 1/2 knowledge of photosynthesis if they did not take biology in the Upper Secondary.

The other 2 questions in this section were also quite tricky. The examiners modified all the questions such that the basic concepts tested were disguised very well. Looks like students need to know a little of A level chemistry or practise lots of prelim papers to get an A1.

MCQ was a little tricky, the other section of Paper 2 was quite predictable.

It also depends on how candidates do for SPA. To do well for SPA, you can ask your school seniors for help and listen very carefully to the teachers. Attend all lab sessions if possible. They drop hints here and there if they are "nice". For SPA, you need to produce exactly to the format that the teacher likes. Be careful when in SPA assessments, the teacher walks past you in the lab. You need to put on your best lab practices and behaviour for his on the spot marking. And treat your teachers well as SPA can be a little subjective.

 That is all for now.

I hope to update this post again when I get more details.

 All the best.

 Cheers!

:)
